The story follows Solitario Cisneros, a retiring Mexican American sheriff, and Onawa, a “gifted and enchanting” Apache-Mexican seer, as they try to solve a “gruesome string of murders and kidnappings" ravaging the town. Valley of Shadows takes place in the fictional town of Olvido, a Mexican town that “lost its country” by virtue of being on the Texas side of the Rio Grande. Still a perfect setting for a border story, but in a different time, different remote place, and that allowed me to get into some historical fiction where I started to draw more inspiration from actual historical events that occurred in the past.” “I got inspired out in the West Texas desert and realized that that would be a perfect setting for the story. “I kept wondering how I could use my style of writing and kind of approach a mix of those genres,” Ruiz said.
